When an animal flies or runs away from you, it uses valuable energy and could get injured. It may also abandon a nest or young.

As well as causing stress to the animal, wildlife disturbance can result in an accident, such as if deer run onto a nearby road to escape.

Most wildlife disturbance happens by accident when we are exploring outdoors. The good news is that we can all do our bit to prevent it by following these top tips:

🐶 Even a well-trained dog can frighten wildlife by being curious when exploring. So, it’s safest to keep your four-legged friend in sight (so you can see what it is doing) - or on a lead - when you’re unsure if there are animals nearby.

👀 Always watch wildlife from a respectful distance and learn to spot the signs of disturbance so you know when your presence has a negative impact.

👣 Use paths wherever possible - to prevent damage in more sensitive natural habitats and to avoid disturbing animals and nests hidden in long grass or camouflaged on the forest floor.

🐿 Follow any locally available advice or signage about avoiding disturbance to wildlife. You may also find information on how to spot more elusive species on these signs, so it’s always worth pausing to read them.

If a seal’s head pops up, you’re close enough! If it has to move away from you, it uses valuable energy and could get injured.

Follow these tips to get the ‘seal’ of approval when these animals are nearby:

✔ Keep your distance on land and water to ensure seals remain relaxed.

✔ Look for signs of stress, such as seals raising their heads and looking at you, bulging eyes (revealing the white parts around the iris), and any movement away from you. If you spot any of these, you’re too close, and it is time to move back.

✔ Keeping dogs on a lead is essential, as even the most trusted canine can decide to run over and investigate a hauled-out seal. Seals may become aggressive when they feel threatened, which could lead to your dog getting bitten and you getting hurt if you try to intervene.

✔ Finally, keep noise levels to a minimum – think about how you feel when you're trying to snooze on the beach!

'Megan McCubbin is heading to Scotland. In the Firth of Clyde off the west coast of Scotland is the Isle of Bute. It is a small island but when it comes to wildlife it packs a punch and Megan is on a mission to see as much as she can for the first week of Springwatch. She will take a deep dive into the underwater habits of seals and watch the impressive hunting habits of Osprey that return each year to breed.'

Even a well-trained dog may chase livestock.

Many dog breeds were bred for hunting or herding, so when they see fast-moving creatures like sheep or cattle, their instinct might kick in, triggering a chase response.

Chasing by dogs can cause stress and injury to livestock. What may seem like a playful chase can hurt vulnerable animals, especially if they're pregnant or have young offspring. If your dog causes harm or distress, you could face legal consequences, including fines.

Top tips for preventing a relaxing walk from becoming a livestock-worrying incident:

🐾 Look out for calves or lambs in fields and where possible avoid walking your dog through these areas to stop mothers and young from becoming stressed.

🐾 When walking in places where there's a chance of encountering livestock, keep your dog in sight and under close control. If in doubt, use a lead - this gives you better control and prevents impulsive chasing behaviour.

🐾 Invest time in training your dog to obey commands, especially recall. Socialise them with different environments and animals when they are young to help them learn appropriate behaviour.

🐾 Be vigilant and stay aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye out for signs indicating the presence of livestock, and if you spot any, take proactive measures to avoid any potential interactions.

NEWSFLASH X 3
We have three, yes THREE, exciting bits of news for you regarding Bute Noir.
*The festival has a new venue for 2024 as we’re moving to The Glenburn Hotel*
*The 2024 programme will be announced on Thursday June 6*
*We are offering weekend passes this year for the first time*
From Friday August 2 to Sunday August 4 Bute Noir 2024 will be held in the Victorian splendour of The Glenburn Hotel with its stunning views across Rothesay Bay. For visitors who wish to stay in the festival hotel, there is a reduced room rate available. Just phone the hotel on 01700 502500 and tell them you’re coming to Bute Noir.
The hotel is less than a 15-minute walk from the centre of town but there will also be a minibus making regular trips between the two for festival goers.
On June 6, we’ll reveal the lineup for 2024 and it might just be our best yet. Our author list has international guests, number one bestsellers, news faces and old – and we’re just bursting to share it with you. Just three weeks until we can!
Having the whole festival in one place means we’re able to offer weekend passes for the first time. This will mean a nice chunk of savings for those festival diehards who go to almost every event. We’ll post more details on this offer soon.
Our move to the Glenburn Hotel (for those wondering, Rothesay Library is unavailable to us this year because of renovation works but we will continue to hold events at Bute Museum throughout the year) means that other great accommodation providers in Rothesay have availability this year. As well as the reduced festival rate at the Glenburn, there are currently spaces at The Boathouse, The Fisherman's Cottage and The Victoria Hotel. Visitors should snap them up quickly.
