SueHydeTheGuide has been to a variety of museums in her time, but yesterday as part of a visit to a lovely friend in Leicestershire she went to the one and only National Gas Museum. Yes indeed! I learnt that before we used natural gas, they made coal or town gas by heating coal without air. There used to be gas-powered hair dryers! I also found what was possibly the exact same make of gas cooker we had growing up in my home town of Birmingham where the cookers were made. Life’s a gas! • • • • •

SueHydeTheGuide is early to meet clients on this glorious Sunday morning in London Town. The bells are ringing as I sit and wait in St James’s Park. This picture is of the famous Pelicans. There has been a community of the huge birds since the 1660s when the Russian Ambassador gave them as a gift to King Charles II. Funny because I’m off to the Tower of London where I will regale my clients with stories of the famous Ravens in the Tower who also have a connection to Charles II. I wonder which are the most photographed birds. The Pelicans or Ravens?? Happy Sunday everyone.

Yesterday SueHydeTheGuide was guiding a very lovely group of Canadian seniors around the Cotswolds. This is in the Midlands region of England and is an AONB = an area of outstanding natural beauty. Cotswolds means sheep enclosures (cot) on a high ridge (wolds). The church is St John the Baptist, in Burford, one of the many wool churches built when the area became rich on the sale of wool around the 11th - 16th centuries. The other pictures are from Bourton on the Water where the river Windrush was diverted to allow for 3 mills along the water. There are lots of traditions in the Cotswolds and today in Bourton on the Water visitors will experience one of them. Two local teams will play football IN the river … yes in the river! I’ll miss it as I’m back in the Big Smoke. • • • •

So SueHydeTheGuide had her hair cut today at Hair By Fairy in the very lovely part of London known at Neal’s Yard. [Fairy also cuts Dame Judy Dench’s hair so I am honoured]. It’s just off from touristy Covent Garden and always pretty - perfect for pesky Instagrammers 😉. Neal was Thomas Neale who developed the area in the 1690s. Neal’s Yard Dairy or fabulous cheese shop started here in 1979, but I usually frequent the one in Borough Market where my clients are dazzled by the friendliness of the cheese mongers and the delicious cheese tasting opportunities! I then tried brunch at Chestnut Bakery on Floral Street - I’ll be back! Happy Monday everyone! • • • • .bakery

SueHydeTheGuide spent a glorious morning on her purple bike cycling to the edge of southeast London. In about an hour I was out in fields and narrow country lanes heading for Down House where Charles Darwin lived and wrote On Origin of the Species. We talk about Charles Darwin when guiding in Westminster Abbey because this is where he is buried in Scientists’ Corner. A lovely summer day on the edge of London and 22.6 miles of exercise! • • •

SueHydeTheGuide has been guiding in Greenwich again this week which is always a pleasure. I had spare time in between walks for the good people from the Viking cruise ship so I had a wander off the usual beaten trail and came across this relic from a bygone era on Nevada Street (not Silver Street). It must have been an eel, pie and mash shop which is a London classic meal if you like that sort of thing. It looks like a scene from a Dickens novel! • • • • •

Yesterday SueHydeTheGuide said goodbye to the lovely girls from Buenos Aires after 6-day tour of London. The theme of the day was Modern Britain so we took them on a walking tour of street art and immigration around Spitalfields then the crazy 21st Century skyscrapers in the City of London, finishing at the Bank of England museum. I wish them well in their studies and I think there may be the future female President of Argentina amongst them. Mucha suerte chicas! • • • • • 💪

SueHydeTheGuide is having a break from London! I’m looking after a lovely group of students and their teachers from Uruguay. We’ve been up north in York and Liverpool which are two fascinating English cities for different reasons and histories. Alexander-Arnold scored the finals and victorious penalty for England against Switzerland btw! Tomorrow we’re heading in a southerly direction! .veronica • • •

SueHydeTheGuide frequently guides in the 1,000 year old Tower of London. There are endless stories to tell, but encountering any of the 7 infamous ravens is always a treat. My ears tune in to their distinctive call. They love the attention and having their photo taken! Why 7 ravens? Well you always need a spare. • • • • • 🇬🇧

SueHydeTheGuide was guiding at the magnificent Hampton Court Palace today. The gardens at the back with the goose foot shaped rows of Yew trees planted in the late 1600s are famous, but for three years running now there are these absolutely stunning wild flowers at the front which I love. They are much better than the wild flowers in the moat at the Tower of London IMHO! • • • •

This lovely man with SueHydeTheGuide is Angus Parker. He is the owner/tour manager/ driver-guide/ guide/ all-round all-knowing cycle holiday superstar who made my first cycling holiday so wonderful. As a guide myself I know a good guide and in fact he’s brilliant. Here we are today coming back on the Eurotunnel train under the English Channel. Thank you Angus and a massive thank you to my amazing friend Ann Carlisle who did so much of the planning and booking and keeping us in order. SueHydeTheGuide is gradually becoming Mrs Greenwich. I guide here quite a lot and this week I took three lovely Aussies to the Royal Observatory and the Queen’s House… amongst other fabulous Greenwich sites. The cantilevered staircase is the (probably) misnamed Tulip Staircase in the Queen’s House. They think they are in fact Queen Henrietta Maria’s Irises! The people taking photos against a blue and partially cloudy sky are capturing the moment when the time ball drops at 1pm over the Royal Observatory. Just think Astronomers have been staring up at the sky here since it was built in 1675! I confess I used to find it difficult to guide the Observatory because it’s a bit complex, but I’m starting to fall a little bit in love with it! After all, you need time to understand Greenwich Mean Time! • • • •

SueHydeTheGuide picked up her clients today from the very opulent OWO hotel or Old War Office. It is the first Raffles hotel in London and is the project of the richest or one of the richest families in the UK, the Hinduja brothers. It has 9 restaurants and a fabulous huge map of London in the 1700s. The grand staircase wouldn’t look out of place in a theatre or palace even though it was a government ministry - very posh. • • • •

SueHydeTheGuide on her last day in a very sunny Copenhagen. A cycling trip with my Danish friend Jannie was fabulous. A touristy expensive beer in the sunshine by Nyhaven then lovely rows of yellow houses that were built as accommodation for the navy now much in demand. Of course as a guide in London I had to photograph the Danish royal guards. They wear blue most of the time, but red uniforms for special occasions. When the Danish monarch is in the building, they fly the flag… another similarity with ours as they also have a royal flag. A lovely day in Copenhagen! • •

SueHydeTheGuide today visited the real setting of her favourite Shakespeare play: Hamlet. For today I finally came to Elsinore or Kronborg Castle not far outside Copenhagen. I loved it and so good to visit a Danish castle instead of an English one for a change, but much the same kind of stories of kings and queens coming and going. The town also offers cute alleyways, shops and houses from at least the 1600s, including a cosy restaurant specialising in Danish open sandwiches or smørrebrød washed down with a beer of course. • • • • • 🇩🇰

SueHydeTheGuide was guiding a lovely group from southwest London today - the Arts Society of Kingston. We seem to have a thing going and each year I show them a different part of London. This year it was Legal London or the Temple area. I love this huge door. This corridor of white tiles is like passing through a time warp from the busy Strand of the 21st century then through an enchanted oak door into an island of 17th century tranquility that is the Temple. I wonder if it’s the widest single door in London?? Probably! • • •

SueHydeTheGuide was returning from a rather pleasant job guiding business people around the eastern edge of the City of London yesterday. I love to show working people where they work (or visit on a business trip). I walked over London Bridge and couldn’t resist a look back at the ever-growing cluster of crazy skyscrapers. Apparently we will have 11 more towers by 2030 and one of them (the Trellis) will be as high or even higher than the Shard! My hope is for more silly names as it makes it easier to remember them as a guide! Yes I like an easy life. • • • • •

SueHydeTheGuide finished a week-long tour at the Tower of London yesterday. I’ve been guiding the brilliant Arts students and three staff members from Red River High School North Dakota, USA. Apart from having to get up at 4am today (!) to see them off at the airport, I’ve had a blast guiding them around London and beyond. They even got to meet the cast of The Play That Goes Wrong at the State Door this week - they were thrilled! They’ve all gone back home with new British accents and English vocabulary they never knew existed! What a great week of guiding!

SueHydeTheGuide has been hibernating in the quiet winter season, but she came out of hiding to join an excellent tour of Lincoln’s Inn - one of the four Inns of Court and islands of tranquility in busy London. I got to go inside the Old Hall, Great Hall and this is the library. Who doesn’t love a shot of rows of colourful legal books and stained glass windows? I love this part of London. It’s fascinating and beautiful too. I didn’t make any noise - promise! • • • •

SueHydeTheGuide also spent 5 hours today at one of the world’s great museums - The Rijksmuseum. Yes I saw the most famous huge painting, The Night Watch, by Rembrandt, but I think Vermeer has the edge for me if I had to choose. The Tower of Babel by Bruegel The Elder was here - a must see for language lovers. The building looks just like Amsterdam Central train station, but that’s because it was the same Dutch architect, Cuypers. He built them at the same time! It felt like a cross between London’s St.Pancras Midland Hotel and the Royal Courts of Justice all containing the National Gallery and the V&A. A really good museum and I must say our guide Jerome was superb! • • • • 🇳🇱

SueHydeTheGuide spent a fabulous evening just wandering around the narrow streets and canals in the Jordaan area where we’re staying. Amsterdam really started in the 1100s when the marshes became fields called Amstelle. The town gradually expanded with new embankments, then for further expansion they dug the main canals from 1613. I’m staying on one of the key canals, Keizersgracht. Gracht means canal in Dutch. The houses that line the canals were built mostly for the merchants who got rich as trade gradually poured into the city. They are still beautifully individual and so pretty at this time of year and at night! Ah what a gorgeous city! • • •

Merry Christmas from SueHydeTheGuide from the fabulous city of Amsterdam. A great day wandering around the pretty area known as Nine Streets - lots of independent shops closed today because of Christmas. The people queuing up are waiting for ‘fries’ slathered in mayonnaise or some other gloopy sauce - v popular in these parts. After Christmas dinner a very touristy boat ride on the canals to see the annual Light Show. • • ❌❌❌
