Slow travel is an offshoot of the slow food movement, which began in Italy in the 1980s as a protest against the opening of a McDonald’s in Rome. The slow food movement aims to preserve regional cuisine, local farming, communal meals, and traditional food preparation methods. This cultural initiative has since burgeoned into a whole way of life known as the Slow Movement, which emphasises connection—connection to food, connection to families, and, in the case of travel, connection to local people and culture
Slow travel can mean renting a cottage or apartment for a week at a time and exploring your immediate surroundings on foot or by car. It can mean taking a bike tour from one village to the next, or driving along back roads instead of taking the highway. It can mean crossing long distances by train instead of air so that you can see the scenery along the way. But no matter how you do it, the key is slowing down—and making the most of each moment of your vacation.
This form of travel allows you to form a stronger connection to the place you’re visiting, and you’ll feel much less rushed. With a “slow” itinerary, you won’t experience the stress of attempting to knock out every site in your guidebook. Instead, you’ll stay in one place long enough to recognise your neighbours, shop in the local markets, and pick a favourite coffeehouse. Few societies move as quickly as Americans do, so slowing down in other countries not only allows you to escape your own stressful day-to-day life but also to slip naturally into the pace of another culture.
Slow travel does have more benefits like reducing your carbon footprints or simply helping in lowering your travel budgets and many more. Europe and Asia are some of the most emerging destinations for slow travel.
However, do keep in mind that slow travel is a mindset, not a destination—and with a little planning, you can do it almost anywhere.

Frugivory: A frugivore is a bird that feeds on fruits, like these Jungle Doves! Frugivory is important for the ecosystem as it helps in the 'dispersal' of seeds of some trees. Birds and bats feed on the fruits. When they p**p - normally far from where they ate the fruits - the seeds enter the soil and eventually grow into new trees! Some plants however which have other forms of seed dispersal, have mechanisms to prevent frugivory - thorns, or sour, bitter or toxic fruits, for example! Chillis contain a compound called 'capsaicin' which makes them spicy, in an attempt to make them unpalatalbe (not edible) to frugivore. Ironic that we now grow chillis for this very property!

Frogs and toads are primarily insectivorous, keeping pests like mosquitos under control by feeding on them. They act as conveyor belts in our ecosystems, by means of which energy flows from insect groups to vertebrate groups - thus forming a vital ecological link in the food chain. By damaging their habitats, insect species that frogs prey on thrive unchecked, as depicted in this innovative poster by Vancouver Zoo.

Built in 1864, legend has it that The Tea House was one of the first colonial tea planter’s bungalows made in the region. The house which has been tastefully restored keeping its colonial heritage intact, is admirably classic in style. This historic house is surrounded by beautiful well maintained private gardens. Inside, the tranquility and atmosphere of a family home are all still intact. Step out into the gardens to relax in the gazebo or lounge on the sun deck, sipping morning tea in the company of the birds while gazing at the majestic Himalayan mountains. The location enjoys beautiful panoramic views and ample privacy. In the evening, gather around the ancient stone fireplace in the library with a glass of wine to listen to stories of life in the hills or try your hand at the antique piano.

If you are one of those staunch nature enthusiasts, then the rainforests in India are surely your place to be.
The Western Ghats stretch of moist deciduous rain forests in India is mostly found in Maharashtra and Karnataka, making up the northern part of the Western Ghats covering a total area of around 30,000 square kms. Home to more than 1100 species of animals out of which more than 200 are endemic to that region. It’s even acclaimed for being a humongous habitat for elephants. However, as sad as it is, two-thirds of the original forest land has already been deforested.
The Agumbe rainforests is a precious gift of life to South India. A biodiversity hot spot, it holds within its folds a world of new science yet to be explored. With an average of 7,500 mm of rain annually, Mountain streams and waterfalls gush with fresh, gurgling rainwater. As Tiger is for mainland the flagship of the reptilian world in these forests is undoubtedly the King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), colloquially known as Kālinga!
So piqued your interest, well join us on our Agumbe Rainforest Herping Trail to Explore, Experience and Learn about Nature & Conservation. Visit http://bit.ly/iTravelRainforestTrails for more info.

People might find feeding the monkeys or (and other wild animals) to be a thrilling experience, but frankly people are not doing the monkeys a favour. In fact, you are actually harming them.
1. Monkeys are highly susceptible to diseases from human hands. They can die from bacteria transferred off your hand that has no ill effect on you.
2. Migration to human-populated areas to be fed increases the risk of dog attacks and road accidents.
3. Irregular feeding leads to an aggressive behaviour towards humans and other species.
4. Contrary to the stereotype, bananas are not the preferred food of monkeys in the wild, especially those containing pesticides, causing issues with their delicate digestive system and serious dental problems eventually leading to their death.
5. Feeding creates a dangerous dependency on humans that diminishes the monkeys’ survival abilities.
7. Monkeys need to travel an average of 17 kms each day to be in good physical condition. If they know that food is available in a particular location, they will not leave that area.
The monkeys do not realise any of this. Now YOU do. Don't facilitate their extinction and so the Next time you see something like this, please do help in spreading the word or inform the nearest forest official.

Habitat loss—due to destruction, fragmentation or degradation of habitat—is the primary threat to the survival of wildlife in the India. When an ecosystem has been dramatically changed by human activities—such as agriculture, oil and gas exploration, commercial development or water diversion—it may no longer be able to provide the food, water, cover, and places to raise young. Every day there are fewer places left that wildlife can call home. Habitat Loss can be classified under Destruction (Wetlands Filling, Cutting trees, Dredging Rivers, Field mowing etc), Fragmentation (Developmental Road Projects, Dam & Water Diversions etc) and Degradation (Pollution, Invasive Species, Ecosystem disruption). The effects of all these directly impact any wildlife species. The loss and fragmentation of habitat make it difficult for migratory species to find places to rest and feed along their migration routes. Apart from changes in the migration routes, feeding & mating behaviours are also impacted and hence resulting in increase in endangered species. Any thoughts on Habitat loss, we would love to hear it.
