How about a second X-Class solar flare?

AR 3590 is putting on a show with another strong solar flare, this time an X1.7 event at 06:32 UTC (Feb 22). So far none of these events looks to have produced noteworthy eruptions. That could change as the region continues to move into an Earth facing position.

Update: M4.2 peak @ 03:11 UTC. Video in comments. Because AR 3575 is located high in latitude near the SW limb, any potential eruptions at this point should be directed away from Earth.

An updated photo of the Sun showing streams of plasma off both the southeast and northwest limbs this evening (Jan 30, 2024 @ 01:25 UTC). A radiation storm remains in progress, although it is weakening and is just above the minor (S1) threshold. Solar activity is at quieter levels so far this evening with only minor C-Flares detected. AR 3559 is now turning onto the NW limb and will soon be out of direct Earth view. Active geomagnetic conditions (Kp4) will be possible over the next 24-48 hours due to a mixture of coronal hole stream effects and the M6.8/CME passing just ahead of Earth.

My Aurora Forecast FAQ

How do I use the app?

The first thing to do is to make sure you have given the app access to your current location, otherwise you aren't going to receive any notifications from the app and it won't show you more detailed forecasts. You can make sure this is the case by opening the Settings app on your phone, scrolling down to "Aurora" and then looking at the "Location" setting.

The most important information in the app is the current KP index, the cloud coverage and the percentage chance of seeing the Aurora.

The KP index is a number between 0 and 9 which shows how strong the auroral activity is worldwide. 5+ is very high, 4+ is high and 3+ is medium. You want this number to be as high as possible.

The cloud coverage should be as low as possible otherwise you won't be able to see the Aurora even if it is directly above you.

The app also shows the chance of seeing the Aurora at your location. This should obviously be as high as possible, but some users have seen great aurora shows even with a 15% chance.

Looking at the first few graphs on the Forecasts screen of the app will give you the biggest chance of seeing the aurora. If you see that the cloud forecast says it will be very cloudy, you could try to go to somewhere else where it will be less cloudy.

A small coronal hole in the shape of a dinosaur is currently facing Earth. The solar wind stream flowing from this little T-Rex should be fairly minor once it possibly reaches Earth within 72 hours. Image by SDO/AIA 193.

‼️Question‼️
How does the level of geomagnetic activity affect the intensity and visibility of the northern lights?

The level of geomagnetic activity directly impacts the intensity and visibility of the northern lights. When the geomagnetic activity is high, such as during a strong solar storm, the chances of seeing vibrant and widespread auroral displays are greater. This is because the heightened activity causes the solar wind to interact more strongly with Earth's magnetosphere, resulting in increased energy transfer to the upper atmosphere and more pronounced auroras. On the other hand, during periods of low geomagnetic activity, the northern lights may appear fainter and less frequent
