RARE BLOOD SUPERMOON
A blood supermoon is a combination of three factors: a full moon, the moon being at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, and a total lunar eclipse.
The exciting astronomical event will have spectators all around New Zealand see a large rusty-blood-red moon hanging in the sky. The last time it happened over New Zealand was nearly 40 years ago.
Join us on a tour tonight with our team of guides to soak in this astronomical phenomenon.

Soak in the stars on New Zealand’s only guided hot pools and star gazing experience! Tekapo Star Gazing operates from the renowned facilities of Tekapo Springs, combining the stunning Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve with our soul-warming hot pools.
A two-hour experience, the first half of this guided tour introduces you to Tekapo’s amazing night skies with high-powered telescopes and a unique combination of astronomy and storytelling. The second half of the tour takes place in a 37.5-degree hot pool; relax on a floating hammock and feel like you’re soaking in the stars as you explore the wonder of night skies. Our guides tell stories about the stars and are there to answer your questions about the universe! This tour includes a free shuttle service within Tekapo and upon request from Twizel, hot drinks plus towels and swimwear if needed.
If the weather isn’t suitable for outdoor stargazing, an alternative indoor tour will be provided. The indoor experience uses state-of-the-art virtual reality as well as a high-definition projector to feature full-colour satellite images of deep space and features similar fascinating and informative content as the outdoor tour.
Our Virtual Reality Space tour begins earlier and is very family-friendly. It starts with an exciting virtual reality astronomy experience with a rocket launch from the perspective of an astronaut, then a fascinating tour of the life cycle of stars.followed by a relaxing hot pools & story-telling experience! This is followed by a relaxing soak in a 37.5℃ hot pool; lie on floating hammocks and admire the beautiful sky while listening to stories about the stars.
Our Virtual Reality Space tour is 1.5 hours long and includes a free shuttle pick-up/drop-off in Tekapo, hot drinks plus towels and swimwear if needed.
Our Virtual Reality and first stargazing tours of the night are suitable for everyone over the age of 6 years old with our later tours only suitable for those aged 13 and over. A pool wheelchair is available on request. Tours run 364 nights per year; start times vary by season to ensure the darkest skies.
