Be compassionate, it can be very hard for the person with anxiety and they would do anything not to feel that way. Telling them to “get on with it” or “there’s nothing to worry about”, will put pressure on the person and trigger off the amygdala in their brain – our threat response.

Compassionately acknowledge they are nervous and make suggestions for ways to refocus their attention. If we provide a lot of reassurance then we don’t allow the person a chance to gain a sense of self confidence in the situation.

"The key to managing anxiety is to stay closer to the present," according to Dr Seif. Instead of replaying the seemingly endless, what-ifs — What if the plane crashes? What if the plane is hijacked? — assert control by turning your attention to the present. "When we're anxious, our whole perspective changes," Seif explains. An excellent way to shift your feelings, and ultimately your attitude, is by staying focused on taking control of anxiety rather than the aspects of flying that are beyond your control, such as sounds, sensations and turbulence. Another way to maintain focus is to socialise with your seat mates or flight attendant, who can lend support and steer you back to the present. Packing comforting supplies, such as music, crossword puzzles, magazines, a book or another in-flight distraction, can also alleviate anxiety.

One of the most unnerving experiences for anxious flyers is various mechanical noises (for example, when the flaps on the wings or the wheels retract, and changes in air pressure, engine speed and throttle etc, which happens usually in the first 30 minutes after take off or before landing. Again, just remember that this is like a car changing gears and no more than that.

Other fliers need to know what frightens you, along with what helps you most to cope with anxiety during flight. If you ask, pilots can speak with you as you board. Flight attendants will give you additional attention if you let them know what you need. Family, friends, and other passengers can help you monitor your anxiety, keep you focused on the present, and help you steer clear of catastrophic mental imagery. Steer clear of “frenemies” who relate their own frightening flights. They might think they’re funny, but they will more likely trigger your own anxiety. Your task is to be clear about your triggers and specifically ask for what you find most useful.

Though flight in turbulence is 100% safe (providing you use your seat belt) it feels 100% dangerous. It's all due to how the brain is wired up. The amygdala - the part of the brain that releases stress hormones- was developed about 100,000,000 years before the Wright brothers developed the airplane. So it should be no surprise that airliners and the amygdala don't get along very well.
When the amygdala senses the feeling of falling it releases stress hormones. If you were on a step ladder, lost your balance and started to fall, it's a good thing that the amygdala fires off stress hormones to force you to forget the ceiling and notice that you are headed toward the floor. One shot of stress hormones gets your attention. It doesn't cause undue distress. But in turbulence, each drop releases stress hormones which build up and cause physical feelings - pounding heart, rapid breathing, sweating, and tension- that are commonly felt when in danger. When turbulence goes on, these feelings intensify and - regardless of logic - it becomes impossible to feel safe. The answer? Inhibit the amygdala. Stop it from releasing stress hormones. How?
