It's Memorial Day Weekend, and our beaches are packed for the unofficial start to the summer.

But here's your annual reminder that we aren't the only ones hitting the beach this summer..so are some of our favorite seasonal visitors: nesting sea turtles and shorebirds. Here are a few easy reminders to help share the beach and be a good friend to wildlife:

Lights OUT - turn off beach-facing lights on homes and businesses by the beach. Walk with turtle-friendly red LED light, or better yet, by the light of the moon!

Stay on the wet sand beach and away from roped off nesting areas or dry sand where shorebirds and sea turtles nest.

Leave no trace! Take your gear (tents and chairs, too!) home with you at night, fill in large holes, and level sandcastles. (Pictured: what NOT to leave behind on the beach)

Keep dogs on a leash and never allow your dog to chase birds or turtles. Even the friendliest pup can chase and injure shorebirds and turtles.

If you're ever lucky enough to encounter a nesting sea turtle, please stay back and watch from a safe, quiet, and dark distance.

Update to all are loyal friends... This spring we didn't have any MAJOR projects down here but a bunch of little things. There is a new foam pad hoping it makes the pull out bed a little more comfortable, solar lights coming up the steps, I installed an outlet on the top of the nightstand which also has 2 USB ports on it. A new kitchen table, exact same style as the previous one only nicer with drawers on both ends for a bit more storage. We have kept our bread and different things there during our stay. We sealed all the decks and install a storage box on the deck.
The court area looks a bit different because the County made us install a new septic system, later this fall we will install a decorative fence around it.
No matter what you do this year, have a great time, enjoy and be safe and as always we are just a message away should you have any questions... Jim & Lois

We know our Southern Comfort visitors are very respectful just by how they take care of our place, but let's face it there are people out there that have no idea what their actions do to our Island. I know you didn't do it but it is all our responsibility to help keep Hatteras clean and safe. If you see something while on your walks, please pick it up and know we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Thank you, Jim & Lois

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was lit on this day (December 16th) 1870. The original First Order Fresnel lens was powered by kerosene and required the employ of Lighthouse Keepers. She is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States measuring at 198.49 feet.

The black and white striped lighthouse we see today was not the first built at Cape Hatteras. The first tower was approved by Congress in 1794, construction began in 1799 and lit in October 1803. It was made of sandstone and at a height of only 90 feet, proved ineffective for mariners. In 1853 the Lighthouse Board decided to add 60 feet, making the tower 150 feet tall and painted it red and white. By the 1860s extensive repairs were needed. Congress approved funding for the taller brick lighthouse to be built.

The original 1803 structure was demolished in February 1871.
