Bhutan is home to the world's highest unclimbed mountain Gangkar Puensum 🏔 (7570m).

Mountains in Bhutan are considered sacred and are protected with a deep reverence for local cultural and spiritual values and most importantly for the future generation.

Since 2003, mountaineering above 6,000m has been prohibited in Bhutan.

However, many treks in Bhutan offer spectacular views of Gangkar Puensum and mountain journeys in some of the most fragile eco-systems in the Himalayas.

As we join the global community today in celebrating International Mountain Day, Bhutan looks forward to welcoming you all soon to the magic world of the mountains.

Happiness is a place 🇧🇹

03/02/2020

It is an inherent quality of a Bhutanese to be offering the best of whatever we have to those visiting our homes. Therefore, it is almost natural for us to ensure visitors coming to Bhutan have the most fulfilling experience and relish every aspect of Bhutanese hospitality.

Every day spent in the country should bestow our guests with moments worth cherishing for the rest of their lives. We have to make sure the visitors become the ambassadors of Bhutan in the part of the world they return to.

And for that to happen, it is indisputable that the government fall back on the fundamentals of country’s tourism policy that originated from our wise monarchs. A small nation has come this far, sailing on the wisdoms and guidance of our Kings.

“Similarly, when Bhutan opened to foreign tourists in the 1970s, our leadership resisted the temptations to harness the quick fortunes from mass tourism and instead was prescient to formulate a visionary policy of High Value - Low Volume tourism. The wisdom of our tourism policy has led to the emergence of a strong Brand Bhutan – an exclusive destination”.

- His Majesty The King at the 14th RUB convocation, 2019

However, this policy metamorphosed to “high value, low impact” in recent years. It was also around the time that the success of the industry was determined by the number of arrivals.

Today, as we redefine the tourism policy, the government proposed the amendment of Tourism Levy Exemption Act in the National Assembly this session. Among other alterations, we proposed for a levy of Nu 1,200 per night halt to the regional leisure tourists visiting the country.

While the SDF component had to route throught the Parliament given its monetary nature, we have more features aligning towards the vision, elaborated in the overall tourism policy the government developed. It will be rolled out in July this year.

For now, we would like to thank the esteemed members of the National Assembly for the unconditional support to our proposal today. This is a clear message that we are all together when it comes to placing the nation’s interest first.
