Established in 2011, Little Bhutan in just a few years has grown progressively – bit by bit, to become one of Bhutan’s leading tour operators of small and big adventure travel. Offering a vast array of cultural, specialized and customized tours and treks, we aspire to provide incomparable travel experiences. Bhutan may be a tiny little Kingdom high up in the clouds but it has an amazing diversity

of people and cultures to offer. Our aim, therefore, from the very start, has always been to give our guests an authentic experience of a place while ensuring that the journey you undertake is stimulating and above all fun. Our team of professionals, in all the places we operate, have under their belts over 16 years of experience in the field of tourism. We believe in handling day to day operations ourselves rather than simply hiring a local company to do it for us. We have a pool of dedicated managers and staff for each of our destinations across the country including guides, drivers, administration personnel and local contacts in the communities we operate who ensure that our adventures are active and involving. At Little Bhutan, we have a responsible travel policy whereby we go all out to maintain and safe guard the areas that we visit. As travelers ourselves, we are aware of the impact tourism can have on far-flung and isolated towns and communities. Therefore, our partners on the ground are from the local communities. We strongly feel that the locals and communities of a destination must profit from our being there. We know it is not easy to try a holiday package before you pay for it, but you can learn a lot more about us and the people who travel with us by simply browsing through our ‘guests’ testimonials’. Bhutan may be small, like our company name ‘Little Bhutan’ suggests, but the experience and memories you take back will definitely be BIG! Bhutan is a land of happiness, they say. Come, experience it with us.

Meet the Team!

The fourth member to be featured is Roshna Rai, intern and newest member at Little Bhutan.

Little Bhutan: What’s your experience been like working here?

Roshna: I am currently working on Reservations, which seems easier than Correspondence. Whenever I need help, I reach out to our manager, who helps me move forward.

Little Bhutan: You started working right after finishing high school which is quite unique but also not uncommon. Do you think you made the right choice by deciding to skip college?

Roshna: Yes. I feel, and have heard that you get the same job even after finishing college. Before working here, I worked in a consultancy where I helped foreign workers apply for work permits. Though the job was pretty monotonous, I feel I have learned skills from that job that are useful in this one.

Little Bhutan: Such as ?

Roshna: Computer technology skills. And I also learnt quite a bit of Hindi.

Little Bhutan: Do you think you might change your stance on college in the future?

Roshna: I don’t think so. I am generally not interested in “studying.”

Meet the Team!

The third member to be featured is Deepak, a driver at Little Bhutan. Deepak is one of the longest-serving team members at Little Bhutan. Before he joined us, he was a bodybuilder, trainer, and chef.

Little Bhutan: What’s the most important skill required in your job?

Deepak: Experience. In the tourism industry, while new drivers may join, seasoned drivers are sought after, especially at a company like Little Bhutan, where we have a larger vehicle. During the monsoons, it can also become risky to drive on the roads, making experienced drivers even more necessary.

Little Bhutan: Can you share with us a memorable experience you’ve had on your journey with us so far?

Deepak: This happened during the road widening in 2016. We were at Lawala Pass in Phobjikha, on our way to Thimphu when the car skidded—making a 360-degree turn, flashing my life in front of me. At that moment, my wife and kids crossed my mind because I thought that was it. Luckily, nothing happened to any of us, including our three female guests. At the end of the one-hour ordeal, we were able to get out of the mishap with the help of our guide and some passersby. The road was covered with ice and snow.

Meet the Team!

We are starting a mini-series to introduce each member of our team. The second member to be featured is Sarita Rai, Travel Consultant at Little Bhutan.

Until recently, Sarita was the sole person in her department. Her situation is a perfect example of learning by doing. In less than a year, Sarita has perfected the art of professionally responding to clients from across the globe. Sarita is also the first and last point of contact for our guests, making her role that much more significant. For now, we are just grateful to have someone as astute and vibrant as Sarita.

Little Bhutan: Given the nature of your job, it can be quite stressful. How do you deal with that?

Sarita Rai: While at work, I don’t give much thought to the “stress” that can come as part of the job. At the end of the day, I just release it, and alone time helps.

Meet the Team!

We are starting a mini-series to introduce each member of our team. The first member to be featured is Sonam, Senior Guide at Little Bhutan.

Sonam has nearly two decades of industry experience. One of our most touching moments with Sonam happened during one of our tours when he openly shared his life story, the challenges he had faced, and how he overcame them. We are incredibly fortunate to have someone as caring, astute, and, most importantly, greatly loved and liked by all our guests as Sonam.

Little Bhutan: What is your favorite thing about being a guide?

Sonam: There are many perks to being a guide. First and foremost, I consider myself a paid traveler. A lot of learning takes place for me daily, and I get to make friends from around the world. Working with clients from various parts of the world, I get the chance to see the world through them and through their views. For instance, if I meet a client from the USA, I can learn about what their life is like back home. I feel that every day on the job, I learn something new. I would go as far as to say I feel enlightened every day.

Ever wondered what happens in December in Bhutan?

"When I think about December in Bhutan, I think and feel good things. December, for me as a kid, marked the beginning of our winter break, which lasted nearly three months. It also means sticking to the same outfit, whether a jacket or a pair of boots. December also means unlimited clear skies. December in Bhutan meant Christmas," writes our content manager.

Located at 3000m above sea level, the village of Laya lies in Gasa, the northernmost district of Bhutan.

In the past, many saints and monks from Tibet entered Bhutan via Gasa. One such saint is Terkhungpa, a 13th-century lama who is said to have scattered over a hundred species of medicinal plants in the region, from which many hot springs emerged. These hot springs, famous amongst locals and tourists are believed to cure various ailments.

Though the people of Laya were among the last in the country to be electrified, they are highly self-sufficient, producing their own food and clothes and utilizing wood and solar energy for their needs.

18/07/2024

Bhutan is one of the few countries in the world that is carbon-negative, meaning it absorbs more carbon dioxide than it emits. This remarkable achievement is largely due to its extensive forest cover, which accounts for around 70% of the country's land area. The forests act as a significant carbon sink, helping Bhutan absorb more CO2 than it produces. This commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development has made Bhutan a global leader in the fight against climate change.
